Description
Sun Corals are vibrant, non-photosynthetic large-polyp stony corals known for their brilliant orange and yellow polyps that resemble miniature sunbursts. Unlike most reef-building corals, they do not rely on sunlight or symbiotic algae for nutrition—instead, they extend their tentacles at night to capture zooplankton and meaty foods like mysid shrimp and brine shrimp. Native to shaded marine environments such as caves, overhangs, and shipwrecks in the Indo-Pacific, Sun Corals thrive in low-light, moderate-flow conditions and require regular feeding to maintain health and growth. They form colonies up to 6 inches in diameter and grow slowly, about 1–1.6 inches per year.
